Bythos a Lace Cowl

Bythos_Collage

Bythos is one of the Ichthyocentaurs. He is a god of sea-depths. He along with his his brother Aphros were called the Ichthyocentaurs.  Aphros and Bythos were present at the birth of Aphrodite.  They pulled in the shell she rose from the ocean.

This cowl was inspired by the pattern drooping Elm Leaf, page 217 Treasury of Knitting Patterns Barbara walker. The cowls above are done in bold colors.  The blue cowl is extra-long in dk weight.  The Orange  one is smaller and wider in fingering weight, the border was done twice at the beginning and at the end.  This pattern can be modified in many ways, be creative and do a different edge border at the beginning and at the end, make it wider, skip it.

Here you have a cowl in my series of Men lace attire. It is easily a unisex item and a timeless piece. Embrace the divine spark within you and wear it with pride.

Chiron Cowl

This is my first published pattern for 2016.  It has been a challenging year, yet a fantastic year.

This cowl is done with two colors, but using one color at a time.  It has texture and is completely reversible.  I have made it with Wollemeisse, Kauni, Kenzie and even handspun.  You have to modify the amount of stitches that you want it to be.  The smaller the gauge the more stitches you will need.

Chiron Cowl (1)

Chiron is a completely reversible cowl, done with two colors. It creates a nice vertical lines illusion while using one color at a time in the round.

Always use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round and to hold your live stitch when not crocheting. The Cowl Pictured above used 9 reps of the main pattern and 1 skein of each color. You can try a Main solid color and a variegated as contrast color.

Materials:
Main Color (MC) 160-320 yards and Contrasting color (CC) 160-320 yards as well.
• Suggested yarn “Kenzie” by HiKoo | Worsted / 10 ply (9 wpi) | 160 yards - 50 grams
• 2 or 3 Stitch markers
• 5.5 mm or I hook
• Blocking pins and mat

Gauge unblocked 7 sts = 2 inches | 7.5 Rnds = 2 inches in pattern, (Rnd 3 and Rnd 4 repeats)

43 inches for Small 150 sts ; 48 inches for Medium 170 sts; 54 inches for Large 190 sts.

You can extend the sizes by increasing in multiples of two, depending on the yarn weight and your desired gauge. The above sizes are mainly a guide. If you are using Dk , Fingering or lace weight, you will need more stitches and more yarn to create your desired size.

Achilles a Fair Isle Hat

Achilles (1)

In Greek mythology, Achilles (/əˈkɪliːz/; Ancient Greek: Ἀχιλλεύς, Akhilleus, pronounced [akʰilːéu̯s]) was a Greek hero of the Trojan War and the central character and greatest warrior of Homer's Iliad. His mother was the nymph Thetis, and his father, Peleus, was the king of the Myrmidons. This is another hat in the series of Gods and Demigods, I hope you make one for you and one for a friend.

**This is a charted pattern NO WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN.**

Materials:

You will need a skein of each color, about 110 to 185 yds for MC, and 100 to 170 yds For CC.

Yarn: Main picture Above Medium hat, 126 sts 53 grams

Little Brother by YOTH Yarns

MC “Poppy Seed“, 26 gms,114 yds ; CC “Cracked Pepper“, 27 gms, 118 yds grams

Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi), 100 gms,435 yds;80% Merino,10% Nylon (Polyamide),10% Cashmere

Pattern Notes: If you substitute the yarn, go with fingering weight
yarn with the same Wraps per Inch (WPI)

Needles: US 4, 3.50 mm double pointed needles or 1 or 2 circular needles with cable of 30 ” (or bigger if you are looking to make the hat using magic loop). At one point DPNs will be useful.

Gauge: 2 “ = 11.5 Sts , 16 Rows in Stockinette Stitch (adjust needle size to get gauge if needed)

Notions: Stitch marker, Darning needle, enough waste yarn for provisional cast on, crochet hook.

Finished dimensions before blocking: The unstretched rib band will measure about 18 (22, 25, 28) inches, if you get gauge. If you want a more fitted rib band, you may drop one needle size down. Do your gauge swatch and see how the fabric behaves and decide if you like it or not. Blocked this hat at 126 sts, measured from crown to purl edge about 8.50 inches tall and 22 inches in the round. Blocking this hat consisted of the hat being hand washed, then laid flat to dry. I used a towel to remove the excess water, by patting it to an almost dry point. You may use other ways of blocking as for a tam or a bigger slouchy form. It has a negative ease of about 1 to 2 inches.

The instructions given are merely a suggestion, a guide for you to follow , or improve upon. This pattern is $6.00

Centauro A mosaic Knitting Hat

Collage Centauro Mosaic Hat (2)

Centauro is the word in Spanish for a Centaur. A centaur is a mythological creature with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a horse. They are depicted with the hindquarters of a horse attached to them. This half-human and half-horse composition has led many writers to treat them as liminal beings, caught between the two natures, embodied in contrasted myths, both as the embodiment of untamed nature, as in their battle with the Lapiths (their kin), or conversely as teachers, like Chiron.

The technique used in this pattern is of two-color slip-stitch knitting or Mosaic knitting. This is a charted Pattern, no written instructions are given. If you can knit simple stripes and slip a stitch, you have all the skills you need. Mosaic knitting involves using the main color for knitting while slipping the stitches of the complementary, contrasting or “other” color. If you are knitting the complementary color, you slip the main color; if you are knitting the main color, you slip the other color. This is another way of working with two colors, but one color at a time. No real floats or locking the unused yarn as you go.

Aside from the allure of color patterning using just one yarn at a time, slip-stitching has other advantages over other multicolor techniques: Mosaic knitting works well either flat or in the round which gives it more flexibility than intarsia or Fair Isle techniques.

Your work will be smaller than you think. When you block your piece, you will need to stretch it a little. This will help the slip stitches to come into form and settle. The hats that I have made with this technique in the round are usually smaller than expected, but do stretch after blocking.

The gauge given “Gauge: 2 “ = 16 Sts and 17 Rows in 1 x 1 ribbing st (adjust needle size to get gauge if needed)”. The gauge for Rows in mosaic knitting is a bit different. I found that mine was about 20 to 21 Rows per 2 inches after blocking, even though my ribbing gauge was 17 Rows per 2 inches. This is due to the fact that these slipped stitches make the fabric a little tighter on the vertical Axis.

Materials:
You will need a skein of each color, about 100 to 175 yds for MC, and 70 to 160 yds For CC.

Yarn: Main picture Above Medium hat, 126 sts 53 grams

Option 1: Wollmeise Sockenwolle 80/20 Twin by Wollmeise (MAIN PICTURE)
Fingering / 4 ply 80% Merino, 20% Nylon 510 yards / 150 grams

Option 2: YOTH Yarns Little Brother (Page 4)

MC “Poppy Seed“, 100 gms,435 yds ; CC “Cracked Pepper“,100 gms, 435 yds grams
Fingering / 4 ply (14 wpi), 100 gms,435 yds;80% Merino,10% Nylon (Polyamide),10% Cashmere
Pattern Notes: If you substitute the yarn, go with Sport yarn with the same Wraps per Inch (WPI)
Needles: US 4, 3.50 mm double pointed needles or 1 or 2 circular needles with cable of 30 ” (or bigger if you are looking to make the hat using magic loop). At one point DPNs will be useful.

Abbreviations:

st(s) = stitch(es)               k2tog = knit two sts together

Gauge:                 10  sts  and 14 Rows = 2 inches in pattern.

Needles:              US 4 3.5 mm

Yarn:                     DK CotLin Knit Picks About 5 skeins or 615 yds for size shown.

The pattern is in multiples of 4 sts, plus 3 sts.  Once you know how many stitches you will be casting on, add 5 more sts for the left border and 5 more sts for the right border.  The extra 10 stitches are for the seed stitch border.  The blanket shown in main picture is 125 sts.  This blanket has a left border of 5 sts, 112 + 3 = 115 sts for the main body and 5 more sts for the right border, this gives you a total of 125 sts.

Begin Pattern by using your favorite cast one method, and cast on the appropriate number of sts.

Note:  You may place a stitch marker after the first 5 sts and before the last 5 sts.  These will be your left and right borders.  Charted instructions have been provided on Page 3.
